Kristine Vartan (nee Ammitzboll) (Australia, 1946 –)
(Untitled mural project) 1985
5 parts, oil on canvas
UTS Art Collection, commissioned 1985, with the support of the NSW Ministry for the Arts
These five impressionist canvases were the result of an ambitious artist-in-residence and art commission project initiated in 1983 by Neville Quarry, then Dean of Architecture and Building at the NSW Institute of Technology.
Partially funded by a NSW Ministry for the Arts grant, the original plans were for a mural and hangings throughout the Tower foyer, however when the remaining funding for the project could not be raised, it was not fully realised beyond this first stage.
At the time of this commission Kristine Ammitzboll had been a tutor in the Architecture faculties at both University of Sydney and NSWIT and was a member of the Public Art Squad who completed several large-scale mural projects in Sydney, including the still-extant mural on the Cresent, Annandale. She married fellow artist Gerry Vartan in late 1980s and continues to paint under her married name.
